Do you look bigger in the mirror

Results 1 to 22 of I ask 'cause at 5'8, lbs, I'm not exactly big. But when I flex in front of a mirror, my mucles seem like they have a decent size to them. Is this just a trick of the mirror or is it just cause I'm skinny so what muscle I do have is well defined?

Do Gym Mirrors Make you Look Bigger or Skinnier?

Ok so it is shoulders day and I love working the deltoids. After a general upper body warm-up I stroll into the weights area, greet all the regulars and then make my way over to the dumbbell rack. I grab the weights of my choice and sit down on a bench right in front of the mirrors. I look good this morning! Looks like I got some size over the past week.

With a confident grin I kick the dumbbells up and sit back to do a set of presses. All the time, through every rep I am looking at my shoulders through the mirror. After the set is complete I stand up and stare in amazement at my amazingly developed cannonball delts. They are looking huge and so well defined. Dang, I am feeling hyped! I knock out another set and strut backwards and forwards in front of the mirror flexing my deltoids. Back home I strip out of my sweaty gym clothes and head to the shower.

Let me have just one more pose down in front of the mirror. I take a look at myself in the mirror. What the frak! Where the hell did my deltoids go?

They were there when I was in the gym; all three deltoid heads meaty and firm. Now all I see are a couple of tennis balls! So it is true….. Just out of curiosity I took note of how I looked in certain mirrors. My mirrors at home made me look….. The mirrors in my local gym always made me look bigger and more defined. I checked out the mirrors in the aerobics room and maaaaan I look like a fraking stick insect!

What the hell! I agree, but I looked bigger before I even lifted a weight. Here are some quotes from members in a number of fitness forums who seem to have similar assumptions about gym mirrors:.

The mirrors in the free-weight area have some sort of concave or contour that make me look thicker. So it is not just me, others feel the same way. But is it the mirrors or could it be the lighting? Maybe it is both. A combination of the fluorescent lighting that blasts light down from directly above which helps add shadow to areas of the body thereby appearing more defined. The big mirrors and fluorescent lighting in the hardcore gyms always seem to make you look way more muscular and vascular.

So is this an optical illusion that has been employed in clothing stores for years? In gyms the top of the mirror is made to lean forward slightly making your upper body closer to the mirror which in turn will make you look bigger. In clothing stores the top of the mirrors lean away from the viewer so that the women who shop there look slimmer when trying on the clothes. I personally think that there are special mirrors for gyms and with the lighting combined are designed to make the gym users look a certain way which in turn will make them feel a certain way…..

A confident and happy client will no doubt be back again to get that same feeling. Then again I could be wrong about this whole thing and the truth is that all mirrors are the same and I have to accept that I am just too much of a buff dude!

What are your thoughts on the subject? Do you know where I could find more information on this? I think if you really want to dig deep maybe finding out where the gyms purchase there mirrors would help. You could then contact the company and ask them direct if they tamper with the mirrors.

Yesterday morning, you looked good. Yesterday evening, before you went out, you're pretty sure you looked real good. So who the hell is this schlub in the Facebook album from last night, tagged with your name? It's a phenomenon nestled somewhere between universal annoyance and urban legend: People see something different in the mirror than they do in photographs. More often than not, the former is controlled, predictable and palatable, while the latter is an endless source of nasty little surprises.

Posed by model. The research, which could explain why some slim people look in the mirror and see themselves as fat, may help to further understanding eating disorders, such as anorexia. Researchers asked volunteers to place their left hand under a board and guess the positions of the knuckles and fingertips, pointing them out with a baton. The results, reported today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, were used to assess mental models of finger length and hand width. In general, participants estimated their hands to be about two-thirds wider and a third shorter than actual measurements showed they were. This view could be more pronounced in women as they tend to be more sensitive to their appearance. The first consists of signals from muscles and joints which, for instance, provide clues about whether limbs are straight or bent.
